GHENT scholarship opportunity

GHENT scholarship opportunity
With support from its "Special Research Fund" (BOF), Ghent University wishes to support university research groups or research centres in developing countries in their aim to grow into excellent research centres by upgrading local academic personnel. Therefore Ghent University grants PhD scholarships to promising PhD students from developing countries who wish to carry out half of their PhD research at Ghent University and half in a university in a developing country. Application Deadline: 7th March 2017 Eligible Countries: Developing Countries To be taken at (country): Belgium About the Award: These grants take the form of a so called “sandwich” scholarship: the candidate obtains a scholarship for maximum 24 months to work within a span of 48 months on an alternating basis on the PhD at Ghent University (‘North’) and at the university or research centre in a developing country (‘South’). Only for the periods the scholarship holder works at Ghent University the scholarship holder will receive a monthly income. The rest of the PhD research is done in the partner university, for which no funding is provided through this scholarship. For this part of the PhD research students must prove that they will be financed at their home university (e.g. fulltime PhD scholarship or salary). Eligible Fields of Research: No restrictions are imposed on the field of research, nevertheless  preference will be given to topics that are relevant for development. Relevance for development measures the degree in which the action of development corresponds with the expectations of the beneficiaries, the needs of the country, global priorities and the policies of partners and donors. The proposals must be submitted by a candidate, a promoter at Ghent University and a supervisor at the local institution. Type: Doctoral Eligibility:To be admissible for this call, all of the following requirements must be met: Candidates need to come from – and have the nationality of – a developing country (see country list in link below); There must be a guarantee that the candidate will be able to work on the PhD project at the partner university in a selected developing country (South). This implies that there must be a local PhD supervisor at the partner university or research center. A written  statement is requested from the university authorities stating that the candidate is either a fulltime PhD student or a staff member of this university and will be sufficiently exempted from teaching or other assignments as to be able to fully concentrate on the PhD research in the South. This statement should also mention that the candidate receives a local PhD scholarship or salary when working on the PhD at the partner university in the South. CSC scholarship holders are not eligible to apply for a Doctoral grants for researchers from developing countries. CSC students are referred to the call Cofunding for Chinese candidates PhD candidates holding a CSC scholarship (deadline October 2017). Number of Awardees: Not specified Value of Scholarship: The value of the scholarship at Ghent University depends on, a.o., the researcher’s family situation and is approximately € 1.958 per month. The Ghent University promoter also receives a bench fee of €15.440 to cover (part of) the operational costs, as well as the travelling costs of the student and both the Ghent University and the local promoter. Duration of Scholarship:  The candidate obtains a scholarship for maximum 24 months which must be divided into several periods within a span of 4 years. Students are obliged to divide the scholarship into minimum 2 different research stays in Ghent (North) and need to return at least once to their home university (South)  in between (=‘sandwich- schedule’) The candidate must propose at least 12 months of locally funded research stay in the South after the first BOF funded stay in Ghent (North). Due to all practical arrangements (visa, housing, contract, …) students are advised to stay for long periods in Ghent (e.g. 1 year). This scholarship call does not intend to support students who plan only 1 research stay in Ghent. How to Apply: The candidate applies to Ghent University jointly with a promoter of Ghent University and a supervisor at the local institution. The promoter at Ghent University has to fill in a separate document (‘promoter’s advice’) with advice on the candidate, stating the promoter’s opinion on the potential of the candidate as a future researcher. The Research Council makes a selection of the applications based in part on the recommendations obtained from members of the Council for Development Cooperation. The recommendation is based on: the qualifications of the applicant; the doctoral project; the relevance of the research topic for development; the scientific/scholarly potential of the promoter’s research group(s); the partnership between Ghent University and the local institute; the scientific/scholarly potential of the local institute. click here for more info

How Lola brought charm from Ijebu to Nnewi

How Lola brought charm from Ijebu to Nnewi

When Emeka broke the news to his parents that he planned to marry a Yoruba lady, they told him that he was a joker. That would never happen, they said flatly. Was there a scarcity of nubile damsels in Nnewi and its environs or in Anambra State and the entire Igboland that their son would travel across many rivers and many states to marry a Yoruba girl from Ijebu-Ode? Or, had the girl bewitched Emeka with “otumokpo” from Ijebu-Ode? She would not succeed, they concluded. Never! Weeks after that, nothing was heard about the issue again. They assumed that the case had been closed. Emeka had come to his senses, they concluded. But had he? Two months later, like a bad dream, Emeka brought up the issue of this Ijebu girl again! This time, his tone was firm. Despite the threats of the parents, he was not cowed. He was resolute to the point of obstinacy. Even the tears of his mother did not move him. His parents concluded their son was indeed under a spell. When it became obvious, after many months of dialogue, pressure, threats, pleas, tears and quarrels that Emeka was hell-bent on marrying Lola, his parents grudgingly gave their consent, but the father warned that nobody should run to him if the marriage went awry. The father also refused to accompany him to Ijebu-Ode for the marriage rites, saying that as an elder, it was a taboo for him to travel far away from home. It did not matter that a few months before the marriage rites, he had travelled through Ijebu-Ode on his way to Lagos. Not only his parents were against the marriage: Out of Emeka’s three brothers and two sisters, only his younger sister was on his side. But Emeka overlooked all that and went ahead with the marriage. When Lola came into the family, it was obvious that she was not welcomed. She was just being tolerated. Matters were not helped by the fact that Emeka had recently relocated his architecture business from Lagos to Nnewi, to take advantage of the burgeoning building industry in the town. And even though he had built his own house, it was within the same compound where his parents lived. It was a large compound: All the four sons had their portions of land within the compound, even though two of them were not based at home. Another handicap Lola had was language: Igbo was the language of the family, but Lola spoke only English and Yoruba. So, Lola began forcing herself to speak Igbo. Any time she uttered an Igbo word or sentence, people would laugh. But her determination and sense of humour impressed everyone. She also did something that nobody around her did: she curtsied or knelt down when greeting elders, especially her husband’s parents, no matter how hard they protested against such acts. That act and her accent marked her out as a Yoruba, which made people treat her like an egg and call her “Iyawo.” Most mornings, Lola would go early to the quarters of her husband’s parents, greet them, tidy up their rooms and collect their clothes for washing. She would ensure that Papa and Mama had their meals. She asked her mother in-law to teach her how to cook all local meals. Mama was eager to teach her, and she learnt fast. Any time Papa or Mama complained of backache, rheumatism or fever, Lola ensured that they got medical treatment. Most evenings, she would spend some time with them, either alone or in the company of her husband, before retiring to bed. Her brother in-law’s wife sneered that she was shamelessly trying to buy love with her boot-licking tactics. But Lola was not bothered about that. Less than a year after Lola came into the family, the music changed. Emeka’s parents, especially the father, never completed a sentence without mentioning “Iyawo.” He would tell anyone who cared to listen, including the wives of his other three sons, that if it was not for Iyawo, he would have long died. Today, Lola speaks Igbo, or rather Nnewi, like a daughter of the soil. As far as Emeka’s parents are concerned, “Iyawo” can do no wrong. Even when Emeka complains about her before his parents, they will not let him finish before warning him never to do anything that will hurt that “peace-loving girl.” Unknown to everyone, before Lola left her parents’ home, she fortified herself for any eventuality, having known that her husband’s family were not happy about the marriage. Her parents had also done all they could to dissuade her from marrying an Igbo man, but their words fell on her like water on the back of a duck. So she knew she had a major battle to face in her new home. Failure was not an option, for if the marriage failed or proved unhappy, her parents would give her the I-told-you treatment. Consequently, before leaving for Nnewi, she boiled herself in a pot of charm. Then, she etched the charm on her face, tongue and heart. The power in the charm was meant to automatically make anyone around her to like her. Anyone she smiled at or talked to was meant to be charmed by her. What is the name of that charm and how much does it cost? The name of the charm is simple: Genuine love for others. It costs nothing to buy. No medicine-man is needed to prepare or administer it. It has no overdose. Everyone can prepare it. Everyone can administer it: At home, in the office, on the street, in the market. Its result on people is magical. Nobody can resist its effect, including “wicked mothers in-law” and “impossible bosses.” Fortunately, it is available in all parts of the world: In Ijebu-Ode or Nnewi, Zaria or Ikot-Ekpene, New York or Kabul. Brides and brides-to-be must realise that even though in-laws may seem difficult to deal with, they are human beings with flesh and blood. Parents – especially mothers – want to cling to their sons as long as possible. Parents are naturally suspicious and even envious of “an outsider” – who did not participate in bearing, nurturing and raising of their child – coming to take that child away. To them, the wife is a stranger who may have a selfish agenda to destroy the peace, unity and love existing in that family. It is the duty of the wife not to breeze into the family with an antagonistic stance. Rather, she should reassure her in-laws – through her words and actions – that she has not come to “take away” their son and brother or to destabilise the family, but that she has come in – like a new baby born into the family – to increase the family’s love, peace, unity and happiness. Everybody wants to be loved, appreciated and respected. When love is shown (over a period of time) to even untamed animals like the bear, leopard, chimpanzee, hyena, etc, they respond with friendliness. Human beings have the capacity to even respond better than animals when shown love. The rule in all human relations is that you get what you give. If you smile a lot at people, you receive smiles. If you are cold to people, you receive coldness and more. If you love to help others, you receive help and love. Therefore, those who go about demanding and expecting love, care, and respect from others may get disappointed, but those who first give love, care, and respect to others usually receive them manyfold. Showing genuine love to others is a potent charm that works like magic.

Modern Feminism - ABIMBOLA PAIGE S.F

Modern Feminism - ABIMBOLA PAIGE S.F

Feminism "according to Wikitionary" is a social theory or political movement arguing that legal and social restrictions on females must be removed in order to bring about equality of both sexes in all aspects of public and private life. Feminism is concerned with bringing about equality of opportunity and outcome regardless of gender. Modern feminism is taking a different toll, making it seem like women are weak and are only victims of men's oppression and violence. It fails to encourage women to embrace their strength and the consequences of their own choices or decisions. Let's not play anyone's victim.  Men who forces women to have sex with them are evil, violent and abusive but that is no reason to take the wrong turn in life. I believe in equality for everyone regardless of sex, race, sexuality, language, height et cetera but I do not want to be addressed, treated or judged according to my gender first before considering my success, achievements and so forth.

Thanks to evolution, everyone has their own skills, though it varies, makes each of us unique. The fact that you are a woman doesn't make you less skilful or intelligent than men but it doesn't make you wiser either. It means you are equal though he might have authority but it doesn't make you worth less than him. Feminism doesn't stand for male oppression but equality. It means that both sexes should be appreciated equally base on their achievements not gender.  There is a rape culture everywhere that is
generally believed to be against women and has
made it seem okay to violate, abuse, rape or oppress men. Women are not the only sex being oppressed; some men, usually boys, are being violated too but nobody pays much attention to it because men are believed to be strong and able to care for themselves, forgetting that we are all humans and we all require attention regardless of our sexes, race or sexuality. Rape is a sin against humanity and it'll be selfish of us (women) to limit our concern to females and not acknowledge the pain of the male victims too.  Feminism is not a war/fight against men, it is a fight
for equality of opportunity, affection, outcome et
cetera for both sexes.

introduction to cloud computing

introduction to cloud computing
Cloud Computing is a model that allows access to a shared pool of configurable computing resource (eg. networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) network on demand. Cloud computing literally, is the use of remote servers (usually accessible via the Internet) to process or store information. Access is usually using a Web browser. Save files on a server via the Internet is one example. The software itself can be mounted also on the remote computer. Cloud computing is the best solution to manage your applications yourself; it is a shared multi-tenant platform that is supported. When using an application running in the cloud, you simply connect to it, customize it and use it. It's that simple, cloud computing! Today, Millions of us are happy to use a variety of applications in the cloud, such as applications of CRM, HR, accounting, and even business applications. These applications based in the cloud can be operational in a few days is not possible with traditional enterprise software. They are cheap because you do not have to invest in hardware and software, or to spend money for the configuration and maintenance of complex layers of technology or to finance facilities to run them. And they are more scalable, more secure and reliable than most applications. In addition, upgrades are supported, so that your applications automatically benefit from all the improvements of safety and performance available, as well as new features. Advantages and Disadvantages The advantage of cloud computing is twofold. It is a file backup shape. It also allows working on the same document for several jobs (one person or a nomad traveling) of various types (or PC, tab or smartphone). Cloud computing simplifies usage by allowing overcoming the constraints of traditional computer tools (installation and updating of software, storage, data portability ...). Cloud computing also provides more elasticity and agility because it allows faster access to IT resources (server, storage or bandwidth) via a simple web portal and thus without investing in additional hardware. NIST counts three service models: Cloud Software as a Service (SaaS): the user has the possibility to use the service provider's applications over the network. These applications are accessed via different interfaces, thin client, Web browser, mobile devices ... The customer manages and does not control the underlying cloud infrastructure including network, servers, operating systems, databases , storage, but can possibly benefit from access to restricted configurations, specific to user categories. Cloud Platform as a Service (PaaS): the consumer can deploy cloud infrastructure on its own applications. The user manages and does not control the underlying cloud infrastructure (network, servers, operating systems, databases, storage), but has control over the deployed applications and the ability to configure the environment of application hosting. Cloud Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS): the client can rent storage, processing power, network and other computing resources. The user manages and does not control the underlying cloud infrastructure but has control over databases , operating systems, and applications deployed. According to corporate approaches, there are several deployment models for cloud services: Public cloud: This type of infrastructure is accessible to a wide audience and belongs to a provider of "cloud services." Private cloud: The cloud infrastructure works for one organization. It can be managed by the company itself (internal Private Cloud). In the latter case, the infrastructure is dedicated to the company and accessible via secure VPN-type networks. The Cloud Community: The infrastructure is shared by several organizations that have common interests (e.g safety requirements, compliance ...). As private cloud, it can be managed by the organizations themselves or by third parties. Hybrid cloud: Infrastructure consists of two or more clouds (private, Community or Public), which remain unique entities but are bound together by standardized or proprietary technology, enabling data portability or applications. Cloud Computing Benefits and Limitations The Benefits ofCloud Computing (Cloud Computing) Cost Reduction: Cloud computing is seen as an incremental investment, companies can save money in the long term by obtaining resources. Storage increase: instead of purchasing large amounts of storage before the need, organizations can increase storage incrementally, requesting additional disk space on the service provider when the need is recognized. Resource pooling: in the IT industry, this feature is also known as Multi-tenancy, where many users / clients share a type and varied level of resources. Highly automated: As the software and hardware requirements are hosted on a cloud provider, IT departments sites no longer have to worry about keeping the things-to-date and available. Greater mobility: Once the information is stored in the cloud, access it is quite simple, just you have an Internet connection, regardless of where they are located. Change the IT focus: Once the responsibility of the computing environment has, essentially shifted to the cloud provider, IT departments can now focus more on the organization's needs and the development of strategic applications and tactics and not on operational needs of the day-to-day. Towards Green IT: By releasing the physical space, virtualization of applications and servers contributes to the reduction of equipment as well as the need for air conditioning, consequently, less energy waste. Keep updated things: Similar to change the IT focus, this benefit is because of the new demands of providers cloud services, ie, the focus of providers is to monitor and maintain the most recent tools and techniques for the contractor. Quick elasticity: this characteristic has to do with the fundamental aspects of Cloud flexibility and elasticity. For example, the web shops carry a standard amount of transactions during the year, but it is necessary to increase near Christmas time. And of course these stores do not want to pay for that capacity at peak during the rest of the year. Measurement service: which means services monitored, controlled and reported. This feature allows a model of pay-per-use service, or pay for use. It has similarities with the concept of telephone service packages where you pay a standard signature to basic levels, and paid extra for the additional service, without changing the contract. The limitations of Cloud Computing (Cloud Computing) The various problem areas for cloud computing environments are: Security: As the data are no longer in their own organization, security becomes a major issue and questions must be answered, such as: Data is protected as adequate? There is a hacker-proof system? Can you meet the requirements regulations and government for privacy? How do you discover the leak information? Note also that corporate governance is always very concerned about the data that is stored outside the organization. Location and Data Privacy: Where the data is stored? How data is stored? The provider has adequate security for data in places where they are stored? Internet addiction: Since the cloud features are not available on the local network, you have to worry about the availability of the Internet. If you lose access to the Internet out, what that happens to your cloud computing environment? If your service provider increasing period unavailability, what you do with your employees and customers? What do you do in case of increased latency or delays the answers? Levels of availability and service: Most organizations are familiar with the agreements service levels. The service level agreement specifies the amount of service capacity that someone has to provide, along with the penalties for not providing this level of service. How you can be sure that the cloud service provider has sufficient resources to maintain a service level agreement you signed with them?

Tree Crushes Vehicle at the Legon University of Ghana Campus (Photos)

A vehicle with registration number GE-3414-13 on Thursday had its bonnet and engine crushed by a tree at the University of Ghana campus.

The vehicle according to some students was parked in the shade of the tree when the incident happened.

No casualty was however recorded but made it impossible for other cars to use the road.

Though the cause of the incident was not immediately known, some of the students blamed it on a pipe leakage at the place which they say has been left unchecked for close to a month hence weakening the roots of the tree.

The vehicle according to some of the students is believed to be for a staff of the University.

Security personnel are currently on the ground to ensure the area is cleared.
